Zug, Schweiz

This weekend my brother visited me in Zurich. After enjoying some food and great drinks the night before as a start of the time together, Saturday was set for doing a daytrip. Still on my bucket list, Zug – similar to Zurich, Lausanne, Geneva and Lucerne – is a calm and peaceful city located near a lake at the bottom of the surrounding mountains. Together with its historic buildings this makes its scenery naturally fascinating and worth a visit.

So in the morning we set out for a short 30 minute car ride to the 29.000 people city south of Zurich. Although the weather was quite cloudy in the morning, we were excited to visit a new place and experience the atmosphere. As the two of us are avid photographers, naturally we brought our cameras and drones.

Luckily we found a spot to park near the waterfront and set out to explore the city, making a first stop at the local farmer’s market at Zuger Altstadtmarkt for my first cheap purchase in two months in Switzerland: half a kilo of plums for 2 CHF.

It seems that monument protection is taken serious in Switzerland since just like in all Swiss cities I have been to before, the streets were marked by well-preserved historic buildings and created a very coherent cityscape.

After taking a slow stroll through the city we found “Brunchfactory Zug“, a breakfast and bagel place in the heart of town. My brother had a carrot cake with orange juice and I had a salmon bagel that was nicely toasted and a joy to eat.

After a relaxed start into the day we continued uphill and found “Museum Burg Zug“, a small round castle.

Having a look around we walked downhill again towards the waterfront. On our way we spotted numerous old and newer houses, villas, and old buildings that went well together and made the cityscape particularly interesting and harmonious.

Upon arriving at the waterfront we were greeted by improving weather conditions and an incredibly calm Zugersee. As you would expect, we could not wait to take some pictures, both from the air and on the ground.

What I especially like about Swiss cities is the amount of bathing opportunities open to the public. The many cities located next to clean and calm lakes make for wonderful recreational spaces right in the city.

The nicely dimmed light coming through the clouds also prompted me to have some pictures taken before we went back to the car to continue our trip to Lucerne.

Adieu!
