Flying into Quito – Ecuador #1

Quito, Ecuador

Having spent a nice evening in Amsterdam the day before, on Saturday morning it was time for us to get to the airport for our big intercontinental flight. We had some early breakfast (6:30am, yawn) at our nearby hotel and then started our journey.

Luckily, Schiphol is one of the good airports where you can leave your tech-items in your backpack for security, which made quite the difference in convenience with all the cameras and stuff I was carrying. We thus got to our gate well in time and after some delays and waiting boarded our plane to Quito, which took off for the other side of the ocean around 10.30am.

The flight was about 11 hours, though with a time difference of 6 hours our arrival was at 4pm local at Aeropuerto Internacional Mariscal Sucre. Immigration was smooth and we shortly after got picked up by our shuttle bus, which took us through mountainous terrain to Quito, which is located about 2.850m above sea level, making it the highest capital city in the world. In line with this, it was quite the bumpy drive.

We then arrived at the hotel around an hour later and freshened up, already a bit tired from the jet lag. The hotel, Casa El Edén, is a beautiful boutique B&B located centrally in Quito.

In line with this, we did not have it far to reach La Vid Restaurante, our dining place of the first evening. It was located right on Plaza Grande with a beautiful view out on the square.

We had dinner and some wine and then returned to the hotel to get some energy for what was bound to be an exciting but action-packed trip.

¡Hasta mañana!
