København, Danmark
10/04/2023
For our last day in Copenhagen, we were pleased to have an extraordinarily sunny day ahead of us. We wanted to discover the famous area around Christianshavn, the area on the other side of the waterway. However, our first goal of the day was to have brunch, of course! So we took our usual route along the waterfront from the hotel and crossed Langebro to get to the other side.
From there we made our way southbound along the nicely made shoreline. It was a broad area with old cobblestone ground and trees as decorations, together with old tram or train tracks, which made for a nice setting on such a sunny day.
We followed the waterfront for a while until taking a left to get to Wulff & Konstali – Islands Brygge, the fancy breakfast restaurant we had selected.
The restaurant’s concept was quite cool in that they give you an option of a 5 or 7 piece breakfast, for which you can choose anything from the menu. This way, you have a nice variety of neatly looking – and tasting – delicacies …
… and we managed to make a good choice of menu.
After this, we walked along the waterfront once more and made our way towards the Christiania area, coming past the royal library Det Kongelige Bibliotek and Vor Frelsers Kirke.
We then were at the entrance of Christiania. To give you some context, the area of Christiania is an alternative housing area and police no-go zone where all the drugs and good stuff (and bad stuff) are being sold. It is a weird thought to learn that there is a lawless zone in the middle of a developed western city, but apparently nothing bad happens when you just walk through, as long as you don’t take pictures of the drug dealers, which of course I didn’t.
Consequently, there are also no pictures to show here. Instead, here’s a picture of some boats on the other side of the community.
From there we made our way towards the more civilised parts of town, namely heading towards Skuespilhuset and the harbour zone again. The entire area was full of people and there were food and beer stands at a square, possibly due to the Easter Monday public holiday celebrations. We walked around the area, taking some pictures of the modern architecture buildings next to the water.
We then continued on to the other side of the water again, coming past the Nyhavn area once more. We had come past it already on day two (you can read more here), but also this time the masses of tourists didn’t give us the impression that we needed to walk that particular pathway again. So instead we had some farewell beer at Tipsy Mermaid, a bar boat parked at the shore, to take in the atmosphere of Copenhagen a last time before travelling home.
A little while later we grabbed our belongings from the hotel locker and took the train to the airport, from where our flight got us home to Vienna in no time.
Det var det, vi ses næste gang!
