København, Danmark

For my girlfriend’s birthday, I had gifted her (and me) flights to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark which we had been wanting to experience for a while. We thus took an early morning flight from Vienna and after a few hours flew over the Baltic Sea, touching down at CPH airport.
We took a half-hour train to the central station and walked the remaining kilometre to our hotel, where we left our luggage and got everything we needed for the day, which included thick clothes as it was crazy cold. If you look at a map and see how far north Denmark lies, it kind of makes sense.
Since we hadn’t planned any itinerary in detail, our first stop was to walk to the nearby waterfront and go from there. We found beautifully calm, dark blue water in front of us, and a lot of modern architecture surrounding it.
There also was a coffee bike nearby and we got our good morning drinks: a cappuccino for me and a chai latte for Nasti. From there, we walked along the water to get a first feel for the city.
We then took a left at Dansk Arkitektur Center towards the heart of Copenhagen.
We came past Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (which we would later visit) and Tivoli amusement park on our way to brunch, for which we had identified Social Brew as our location of choice.
After brunch, we walked around the city centre to get some firsthand impressions but then really wanted to check out the Glyptotek, which had looked quite inviting when we walked past it before.
As became clear to us rather quickly, Denmark is an expensive place, and students are not exempt from this. Coat check was 2€, followed by about 13€ per person for ‘discounted‘ entrance. We paid and made our way inside. Immediately, we were captivated by a huge indoors botanical garden.
From there, numerous doors and alleys branched out in various directions, each leading to a distinct exhibition showcasing a diverse array of art. This included huge collections of statues, busts and Egyptian artefacts from the Pharaos. Moreover, a plethora of paintings from different renown artists were featured, including masterpieces by French Impressionists like Edgar Degas and Post-Impressionists such as Paul Gauguin, along with pivotal works from the Danish Golden Age.
Having walked around the city some more and feeling quite tired, we had some takeout for dinner and went to bed quite early to be energised for the next day.
Vi ses snart!
