Arriving in Berlin

15/03/2023

When I decided to join my mother for an event in Berlin, it had been a while since last having been there. I had visited a few times many years earlier for day of German unity and despite the numerous attractions and things to see, the city had always had this dirty, harsh vibe to it that I was not used to. But this time was poised to be different. We had taken the ICE and actually arrived on time. After storing our luggage at the hotel, we made our way around the central district of Mitte along the notorious boulevard Unter den Linden.

Our stroll took us towards the Reichstag building, where the German Federal Parliament ist located. There was quite the cue in front, so it would have been too much of a hassle to enter, though I would enjoy seeing a parliamentary debate live some time.

In front of the parliament was also one guy with an upside down German flag protesting for or against something. Most people are always against something, I reckon it was the case also for that person. On a similar note, the nearby Bundeskanzleramt, where the German chancellor resides, has recently been subject to a ‘protest’ by climate terrorists cutting down a tree to fight for the environment. Go figure that one out!

We then proceeded along Paul-Löbe Haus, another building of the parliament, where we watched some committee meetings through the windows before walking towards Marschallbrücke and the Spree river.

Having seen the area, we made our way back towards the hotel. We came past a VW concept store that featured a lot of exciting products, including a cute Porsche children’s book which I promptly got.

We then got ready for our evening event, which was a lot of fun and concluded the day.

Leaving Berlin

The next morning started with a nice and relaxed brunch at the hotel. They had a wide variety of bread and pastries, cold cut, scrambled eggs and fruit, together with freshly pressed juice, some coffee and newspapers. I love reading newspapers physically, though I never find the time to go and get them in my day-to-day.

With our train scheduled for the early afternoon, we had some time to spend enjoying the beautiful weather. This time we strolled in the other direction of Unter den Linden, towards Humboldt Forum, which had a rooftop terrace we wanted to visit.

We then got our luggage and entered the subway to Berlin’s central station, from where we took a train to Prague.

Bis bald!
