Lucerne Yearn

Luzern, Schweiz

As it was my ambition to see as much of Switzerland during my time there as possible, my brother and I figured we could continue our daytrip to Lucerne. It was a half-hour drive from Zug, but the search for a place to park the car must have taken another half hour. We finally found a spot near a harbour on the southern side of the city.

We then walked towards the city centre, stopping at Buvette Bar inside Inseli Park for some apéritif.

We continued to a balcony on Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Luzern where Lucerne Festival was taking place. The building offered a view of Vierwaldstättersee, the lake next to Lucerne. Come to think of it, I believe every major city in Switzerland is built next to a lake or at least a river.

From there we proceeded past the central station towards the Reuss river. The entire city was quite full of people, though I can’t tell if that was because of the Lucerne Festival, since most of the tourists were not dressed like avid concert goers.

Crossing Seebrücke towards Lucerne’s old town, colourfully decorated with flags

After crossing the road we were at the historic waterfront, allowing a better view along Kapellbrücke, Europe’s oldest and second longest covered bridge. The medieval wooden construction built in 1365 was decorated with flowers and formerly used to serve as a chemin de ronde, a defense walk.

We continued through old-town Lucerne and came past Kornmarkt, the public square in front of the town hall. There, a band was playing. But upon noticing that their music was terrible – and that they were conspiracy theorists – we quickly followed the alley westbound.

Having become hungry our goal was to find a good but affordable restaurant in the city centre, an all but impossible task. After a google search we decided for Bierliebe & Friends, beer-and-burger place directly at the waterfront. The food was solid and they offered a nicely curated selection of craft beers.

Walking the Reuss waterfront to what would be our restaurant

This marked the end of our city trip for the day. However, there was still some time left before sunset so we drove up a nearby mountain to gain some altitude for a scenic view of Vierwaldstättersee.

Ade!

An almost 180° panoramic view of Vierwaldstättersee. Lucerne hidden behind the hill in the distance

I promise I will stop with the pun blog post names some time soon-ish 😉
