Bern baby, Bern!

Bern, Schweiz

07/08/2022

Having been in Switzerland for more than 5 weeks for my internship, it was time to finally get to know the country better. My plan was to do a daytrip to Geneva, but since the cheapest train ticket was a day pass anyways I decided to do some stops on the way.

I left the house at 6.30 to make the most out of my day. A roughly 1h train ride from Zurich main station later I arrived in Bern at around 8.

After leaving the railway station I walked towards the Parliament Building and city centre. You can imagine a small city like Bern not buzzing with people at 8am on a Sunday morning, and I actually enjoyed the tranquillity (and having no-one stand in front of my photo subjects). I also noticed a rather constant olive colour scheme across buildings. After taking a couple of pictures I continued through the gates right of the parliament down towards a ledge.

Following this path I was able to see some of the panorama the surrounding countryside has to offer. To my right I saw the parliament where I had just come from, in the middle there was the view towards the south and on my left lay Kirchenfeldbrücke.

My walk then took me across said bridge. This allowed for a new perspective of the city centre and Berner Münster church.

On the other side I found a cluster of different art galleries and museums as well as Bern’s historic museum.

However, upon realising that at this time of day all of the above were still closed, I walked back and downhill to take a look at the bridge from below.

It was a nice view but as I would soon realise there was nothing more to it, so I climbed the hill again to check out the centre. There were numerous little boutique stores and of course the aforementioned Berner Münster.

Next up I went to visit the town hall which despite the monotonous lighting looked quite majestic. The colours of the Swiss canton flags stood out and the clouded skies made for a dramatic backdrop.

I then headed to Kramgasse, the main road of the UNESCO World Heritage city centre and followed it towards Zytglogge, an old astronomical clock on the side of a tower. On the way there were numerous fresh water fountains and historical artefacts like buildings & statues that were exciting to spot.

I took a last look at the northern side of Bern, including its City Theatre and then walked back to the main station for my train to Lausanne.

Ade!
